90,000 hours of change

In a recent study from Targus, it was discovered that the average person spends 90,000 hours at work over their lifetime.

90,000 hours is quite a lot of time. If we break that down for you, its equivalent to 3750 days or about 10 years!

Or for you movie goers, it’s the equivalent to watching the 1997 thriller ‘Face/Off’ more than 40,000 times over!

Working for 90,000 hours you are likely to find yourself falling into a routine of bad habits, from poor posture to unhealthy snacking, especially if you’re a flexible worker and find yourself working from the comfort of your own home.

Maintaining a healthy lifestyle is crucial, especially in the office environment. In the UK, there are several practical habits you can adopt to promote your well-being and vitality throughout the workday:

  • Prioritise Ergonomics: Ensure your workspace is ergonomically optimized to support good posture and minimize the risk of musculoskeletal issues. Invest in an adjustable chair, position your monitor at eye level, and arrange your keyboard and mouse for comfortable usage.

  • Incorporate Movement Breaks: Combat the sedentary nature of office work by integrating movement breaks into your routine. Take short walks, stretch at your desk, or use stairs instead of elevators. Regular movement boosts circulation, reduces stiffness, and enhances energy levels.

  • Embrace Good Hygiene Practices: Maintain excellent hygiene to prevent the spread of germs in the office. Wash your hands frequently with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. Use hand sanitizers and disinfectant wipes to clean your workspace, including frequently touched surfaces.

  • Utilise Lunch Breaks for Activity: Make the most of your lunch breaks by engaging in physical activity. Go for a walk or run outdoors, join a nearby gym, or participate in fitness classes. Physical exercise during lunch not only improves fitness but also refreshes your mind for the remainder of the day.

  • Stay Hydrated: Keep yourself adequately hydrated by drinking plenty of water throughout the day. Aim for at least 8 glasses (around 2 liters) of water daily. Having a reusable water bottle at your desk serves as a reminder to stay hydrated and promotes better concentration.

  • Opt for Nutritious Snacks: Choose healthy snacks that nourish your body and provide sustained energy. Keep a stock of fruits, nuts, yogurt, or granola bars in your desk drawer. Avoid sugary and processed snacks that lead to energy crashes and opt for whole foods instead.

  • Put down the Greggs sausage roll: Prepare and bring nutritious homemade lunches to the office. Incorporate lean proteins, whole grains, and plenty of vegetables. Avoid relying on fast food or processed meals, which are often high in unhealthy fats and sodium.

  • Promote Active Meetings: Encourage active engagement during meetings by suggesting standing discussions or walking meetings. This not only adds physical activity to your day but also fosters creativity, collaboration, and productivity.

  • Nourish Mental Well-being: Take care of your mental health by practicing stress management techniques. Incorporate deep breathing exercises, mindfulness, or meditation breaks into your schedule. Seek support from colleagues and utilize workplace resources for mental well-being.

  • Cultivate Work-Life Balance: Strive for a healthy work-life balance to prevent burnout and maintain overall well-being. Set boundaries between work and personal life, prioritize leisure activities, and make time for relaxation and self-care. Balancing work and personal commitments are essential for long-term health and happiness.

Adopting these ten healthy habits can transform your office experience into a balanced and healthy lifestyle. Prioritise your well-being by incorporating movement, healthy eating, hygiene practices, and mindfulness techniques into your daily routine. By taking care of your physical and mental health, you'll create a foundation for sustained success and happiness in the office and beyond.
