The in's and out's of SEO

Updated: Oct 17, 2022

SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) is an incredibly important and valuable digital marketing tool that everyone should be thinking about putting the time and effort into getting right, but do you know how it works?

Most people in business have a good general idea of what it means, and roughly what’s entailed to see positive results, however they don’t always realise just how much of a complex system it really it can be.

The end result of great SEO means more people find you online.

‘61% of marketers consider SEO efforts and boosting or-ganic presence their top inbound marketing priority’

So what makes great SEO?

Key words;

Keywords are words or short phrases used within your content that allow it to be more visible online. Lots of research goes into finding the perfect keywords that have high search rates but low competition. You also need to think about different length keywords, for example if you were an accountant you might use ‘accountant’ (short keyword) ‘accountant for hire’ (long keyword) ‘Accountant for hire in Derbyshire’ (Geographical keyword).

No one knows your customers as well as you do! Spend some time thinking about what they are likely to be searching.

Backlinks:

The #1 result in Google has an average of 3.8x more backlinks than positions #2-#10 -

Backlink building is a great way of showing search engines that your website is genuine and high quality. Backlinks are gained when someone else’s website has a link to your website, these can be achieved by engaging content that’s likely to be shared online. You can also make sure your company is listed in business directories and even try your hand at guest blogging!

Local Searches:

‘46% of all searches on Google are for a local business or local service’ -Search Engine Roundtable

Getting your business listed with local business directories and having a google business profile will help boost your reach and potential client growth. This also links with your geographical keywords to help boost you to the top of the google maps search results.

Content:

The average content length of the top position Google article contains 1,447 words -Source: backlinko and Ahrefs

Your websites content is also key to having a great SEO ‘score’. You want your content to be optimised with keywords and phrases but also be engaging and relatable. Try to avoid too much jargon!

Your content also needs to be supported by on-page optimisation, this dictates where in your content the keywords get placed, where you place images and their corresponding alt texts.

Images should include ‘Alt texts’. These are used to describe what the picture is so that people unable to see the image know what it is. Search engines want your content to be accessible for all and you’ll be penalised for not doing this with lower rankings.

Why do I really need to do this?

The whole idea behind SEO marketing is to get your website to the top of search engine results. Google has over 85% of the search engine market, and their studies show that results on the second page only get 0.7% of all clicks it definitely shows how important it is to get yourself on that first page of results.
